Tommy Johnson Selected as Award Recipient

December 11, 2018

There are very important people working inside of each and every skilled nursing facility. The NC Health Care Facilities Association (NCHCFA) provides a venue to honor and celebrate those individuals that are recognized as exemplary.  This year, Tommy Johnson, Piedmont Crossing Housekeeping/Floor Care Technician will be recognized for the "Riley W. Clapp Outstanding Service” award.

The NCHCFA Annual Awards program provides the opportunity to acknowledge front line unlicensed personnel who have demonstrated outstanding achievements in the long term care profession. Individuals are nominated by their colleagues for these special awards. The program honors individuals who are the backbone in our facilities because of the care they provide to residents. Each year an outstanding Nurse Aide is recognized from each of NCHCFA’s five districts.  Of the five Nurse Aide winners, one individual is recognized as the J.R. Garrett Direct Care Worker of the Year Award for the exceptional service they provide to North Carolina’s long term care residents. In addition, one recipient in a non-nursing discipline is recognized for the “Riley W. Clapp Outstanding Service” award. Each of the award recipients are honored at the Annual Awards Gala during the Annual Convention & Expo.

Since 1988, Tommy Johnson has dedicated much of his life to long-term care.  From CNA to Medication Aide to Floor Care Technician, for Tommy his day-to-day responsibilities are part of his mission in life - giving residents a quality of life that includes being around caring, pleasant employees.

“I witness daily the smiles and laughter Tommy brings to others,” shared Jan Briggs, Piedmont Crossing Administrator and the colleague submitting the nomination. “He never walks past a resident or co-worker without speaking their name and saying hello.”

Tommy is also a resident advocate.  When Hurricane Michael shifted paths and high winds and rains hit the area, Tommy was the first to go door to door to check on the residents to see that they were safe.  He also, without complaint or hesitation, increased his hours to cover for others, as well as filling weekend shifts.

“Tommy is one of the most dedicated employees I have met in my 26 year career in long-term care,” shared Briggs. “We are blessed to have him on our team at Piedmont Crossing and thrilled to recognize him in front of his peers across the state.  He is so deserving!”
